One of the most positive aspects of Budapest’s development is its openness in different fields, which is turning it into a truly cosmopolitan city.

In the gastronomic world, it has seen its culinary offer grow to meet the needs of its most demanding inhabitants and the most gourmet tourists.

That is why we want to compile a list of the best vegan restaurants and bars in the city. Of course, we could not list all of them, but they are the ones we would consider essential.

Best Vegan Restaurants and Bars in Budapest

Szabad Bisztro

Király utca 101

Between the Széchenyi Baths and St. Stephen’s Basilica, about a twenty-minute walk from both, hides this little gem of the local vegan scene.

With a vintage décor and a cosy and unbeatable atmosphere, you can enjoy flavourful, delicious and homemade dishes. Of all their sandwiches, bagels, sauces and dishes of the day, we must highlight their goulash. You can’t leave without trying it.

Madal Food

4/b Alkotmány utca

The Madal cafeterias are a well-known chain in the city, and now you can enjoy all their experience in the best vegan dishes.

Right next to their Alkotmány utca location you will find this vegan spot with great quality food, gluten-free pasta, additive-free but full-flavoured ingredients, and a cosy and elegant atmosphere.

Enjoy tasty natural sauces, quesadillas, vegan cheese, smoked tofu and a host of healthy options next to the magnificent Parliament building. It’s a great place to stop and pick up your strength.

Napfényes Restaurant

2 Ferenciek tere

Since its opening, it has been a great meeting place for those who love tasty and healthy cuisine, locals and tourists alike.

And their popularity is not only due to their work to bring dishes that have a balance between price, taste and quality, but they also strive to create new combinations and to offer an attractive and eye-catching presentation.

So much so that they manage to bring typical Hungarian dishes to the table in a vegan version. At first it may sound contradictory, as they are mostly meat-based, and impossible, but once you try them you will discover that they are capable of anything.

Don’t forget to order dessert either, because their puddings and cakes are on a par with the rest of their cuisine.

Hummus bar

6 Hollán Ernő utca

Although the chain has many locations around the city, this is the location to visit if you want to see why it has earned its place among the best vegan restaurants in Budapest.

The menu is full of great hits; falafels, sabich, shakshuka, couscous with pita breads and laffa. Salads and potatoes.

However, you can’t miss the chance to try one of the many types of hummus they have.

Tökmag Vegan Street Food

Hollán Ernő utca 5

Vegan street food restaurant whose menu highlights include burgers, sandwiches and soups, all full of flavour and nuances.

The most popular opinion is that you can’t leave without trying their pumpkin seed and sweet potato Tökmag Burger Édesburgonya and their pumpkin cream soup, Sütőtök Krémleves, both indoors and outdoors on a small terrace.

The location is perfect as it is just a few metres from the Margaret Bridge. And don’t forget to grab a dessert before you go on your way; the chocolate biscuits and chocolate cake are fantastic.

Mennyország Szive

Nefelejcs utca 3

This is one of those little gems you’ll talk about with your friends back home. It has a special charm, either because of the cosiness of the place or because of the love that the couple who own the place put into everything.

You can have lunch there, although the size does not allow for many customers, or take it to go and enjoy it in one of the two parks between which it is located.

Really delicious food, lovely atmosphere and not at all a place exploited by tourists. Enjoy all the flavour and tranquillity of a nice day out.

EPOCH Vegan Burger

Királyi Pál utca 20

This is a burger bar as you would imagine in any city. With the small detail of the type of food they sell, delicious vegan burgers with all the flavour.

Inside, there is little to highlight, as it has a neutral decoration in which the food is the protagonist. The service is friendly and fast. And don’t forget to order the sauces, they’re homemade and fantastic.

It’s a great option if you’re in the central market area of Budapest.

Vegan Love

Bartók Béla út 9

This is the perfect place if you plan to spend the morning or afternoon in the area between the highly recommended Gellért Spa and the Gellért Hill Cave. Two well-known sites that combine the adventure of discovering the latter with the relaxation of the former.

This vegan street food restaurant has a wide variety of options on its menu. The portions are plentiful and full of flavour. The big proof of their prowess is their macaroni and cheese… no cheese! All the flavour and no lactose.

Ambience reminiscent of nature with green walls and wood tones. Its appearance is reminiscent of any fast food place but then its food is on another level. There is space both inside and on the terrace.

Tahina Bite Vegan Food

Wesselényi utca 2

As with many of these types of establishments, the interior will remind you of any other fast food joint. But the secret lies in the quality of the dishes and the warmth of the flavour.

They have different food offerings, snacks, sandwiches, salads or fries, but something you must try, yes or yes, is the falafel. It’s one of the best you’ll find in the whole city.

One recommendation is to visit one of the most picturesque ruin bars just a few steps away; Szimpla Kert. It is so well known that it is almost part of the city’s tourist route along with other monuments. Its great nightlife is second to none to what you can discover in the evening.

VegaCity

Múzeum krt. 23-25

This is a large, nicely decorated, two-storey canteen-style restaurant. You can enjoy fresh food and fast service both inside and on the terrace. Great place with atmosphere, two floors, nice decoration.

Among its customers you can find both locals and tourists who go there due to its great recognition. It has a great location to take your meal and enjoy it outdoors, if the weather is nice. It is located between the Károlyi Garden and the Hungarian National Museum with its large back garden.

KARAVÁN

Kazinczy utca 18

We must end this review of Budapest’s best vegans spots with a place that encompasses a wide range of culinary options. Karaván is a collection of food trucks and food stalls in a pedestrian area.

Here you can find vegan, vegetarian and traditional Hungarian cuisine. It’s a busy place, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s overcrowded.

A large street market with high quality food and very popular prices. It is certainly one of those places you have to visit before you leave.
